EJVS 1, Issue 4, part c: news N E W S THE INTERNATIONAL FOUNDATION FOR THE STUDY OF THE VEDAS (formerly Int. Found. for Vedic Education) is a non-profit organization registered in the State of New Jersey, USA. Its aims include the following: - helping to preserve traditional teaching and study of the Vedas in India and Nepal and Vaidika scholarship in general, - furthering the study of the Veda in the West, through an exchange and dialogue between traditional Indian / Nepali Vaidika and modern "western" scholars.[B It is obvious that the learning by heart and the traditional study of the Vedas are increasingly in decline as young people turn to more profitable occupations. We should do what we can to help those Vaidika scholars and students who still teach and learn the Vedas by heart and those who carry on traditional Vaidika learning as well as research on the Vedas in India and Nepal. To establish a sustained contact between Vaidika and western scholars the Foundation has established its International Center at Harvard University (53 Church Street, Cambridge MA 02138, ph. 617 496 8570, fax 617 496 8571, email witzel@husc3.harvard.edu). The society keeps close contact with and tries to aid traditional Vaidika Pathasalas in India and Nepal. It has entered into agreements with them and with other bodies interested in Vaidika learning and research in these countries. In order to inform the interested public a journal, Vedaprabhaa, is published periodically. The Foundation has also held local and international conferences to further the course. A conference on the Atharvaveda was held in New York, at the United Nations, in July 1993 with the participation of traditional and modern scholars from India, Europe and the Americas. Another conference is planned for next year at Harvard University; it will focus on the Samaveda and Gandharvaveda. A n A p p e a l However, in order to sustain these endeavors, the interested public is asked to aid the Foundation morally as well as practically. The Foundation requests donations from its well-wishers to further the aims described above. The officers of the Foundation work on honorary basis, without any remuneration. All donations are used for the purposes described above. They are tax-deductable. Their use is documented on a yearly basis. If you feel inclined to help the cause, please send a check to the Foundation. Its President, Mr. Sastry Kambhanpati, will be glad to answer any further questions (ph. 908 396 3941). Please make out your check in the name of the Foundation and sent it to International Foundation For Studies In The Vedas, P.O. Box 7, Colonia NJ 07067-0007.
